What Is a Lip Flip?
A lip flip is a quick cosmetic treatment that uses a few tiny drops of Botox to relax the muscle around your mouth. That muscle, the orbicularis oris, curls the upper lip inward and upward, especially when you smile. When it relaxes a little, the upper lip gently rolls outward.
The result: more of the pink part of your lip shows. Your lip looks fuller and more defined, even though no volume is added. You keep your own lip, just more of it on display.
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Lip Flip?
A lip flip suits you if you want a subtle change rather than a dramatic one. It works especially well if:
Your upper lip looks thin, or thinner than your lower lip
Your upper lip seems to disappear or flatten when you smile
You want a fuller look without adding filler or volume
You show a little extra gum when you smile and want to soften it
It may not fit if you want a big change in size, or if you play a wind instrument. Dr. Taranov will tell you honestly whether it's the right tool.
Lip Flip vs. Lip Filler: What's the Difference?
They do different things, so the right choice depends on your goal.
How it works: A lip flip uses Botox to relax the muscle so your lip rolls out. Filler is a gel that physically adds volume to the lip.
The look: A lip flip gives a subtle, natural lift and a little more lip showing. Filler can change size and shape more noticeably.
How long it lasts: A lip flip lasts about 2 to 3 months. Filler typically lasts longer.
A lip flip is a good place to start if you want something quick, subtle and temporary.
Your Lip Flip Visit, Step by Step
Text to book. Text BOTOX to (239) 737-3137. We reply 24/7, with evening and weekend times. We're open Monday to Friday 8 AM to 7 PM and Saturday and Sunday 9 AM to 3 PM.
Talk about your goals. Dr. Taranov looks at your lips at rest and when you smile, along with your teeth and gum line. She explains what a lip flip can and can't do for you.
Prep. Your lip area is cleaned. Most people don't need numbing because the needle is very fine and only a few small injections are placed.
Treatment. Dr. Taranov places tiny amounts of Botox along the upper lip border and, when needed, near the corners of the mouth. Most people describe it as a quick pinch.
Done. The treatment itself takes just a few minutes. You can return to work, errands or the beach the same day.
When Will I See Results, and How Long Do They Last?
A lip flip is gradual, which keeps it natural.
First few days: You may start to notice your upper lip relaxing and rolling out.
About 1 to 2 weeks: Your fuller look settles in.
About 2 to 3 months: The effect slowly wears off as the muscle returns to normal.
It wears off sooner than forehead Botox because your mouth moves all day. You can book a touch-up when the lip starts to curl back in. If you are also getting Botox for forehead lines, 11s or crow's feet, we can often plan visits together.
Lip Flip Aftercare Tips
Aftercare is simple:
Don't rub, press or massage your lips for the rest of the day
Stay upright for a few hours after your visit
Skip strenuous exercise for the rest of the day
For the first week or two, your lip may feel a little different. Some people notice it's harder to drink from a straw, whistle or say certain sounds with a tight "p" or "b." This is usually mild and fades as you adjust. If anything feels off, text us anytime.
Why Choose a Dentist for Your Lip Flip?
Your lips and smile work as one unit. As a dentist, Dr. Taranov studies that unit every day: how your lip moves and how much tooth and gum show.
That means a small, precise dose placed exactly where it helps your smile, without making your lip feel heavy or stiff.
Dr. Taranov earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery from the VCU School of Dentistry with honors, was selected for the advanced CAD/CAM program, and served as a teaching assistant in advanced restorative and digital dentistry. She personally performs every Botox treatment at Lumeria Dental. You can learn more about Dr. Taranov here.
Our team speaks English, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian and Hungarian, so you can ask every question in the language you're most comfortable with.
Pair Your Lip Flip With Other Smile Treatments
A lip flip shows off more of your smile, so it pairs well with treatments for your teeth:
Gummy smile Botox: If your upper lip lifts high and shows a lot of gum, a few extra units can soften that lift. Learn more about gummy smile treatment.
Teeth whitening: A brighter shade makes a fuller lip look even better. See teeth whitening in Naples.
Porcelain veneers: For chips, gaps or uneven teeth, veneers can transform the shape and color of your smile.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a lip flip hurt?
Most people feel only a quick pinch with each tiny injection. The needle is very fine and only a few small injections are placed, so numbing usually isn't needed.
How long does a lip flip last?
A lip flip usually lasts about 2 to 3 months. Your mouth moves all day when you talk, eat and smile, so the effect wears off sooner than Botox in the forehead.
When will I see my lip flip results?
You may notice a change within a few days. Your fuller look typically settles in about 1 to 2 weeks after treatment.
Can I drink from a straw after a lip flip?
You can, but the first week or two it may feel harder to seal your lips around a straw. This is common and mild, and it usually eases as you get used to the result.
Will a lip flip make my lips bigger?
A lip flip doesn't add volume. It rolls your upper lip slightly outward so more of it shows. The result looks fuller and more defined while still looking like your own lip.
Can a lip flip help a gummy smile?
Yes, it can soften a mildly gummy smile because it relaxes the lip as it lifts. For a more noticeable gummy smile, Dr. Taranov may add gummy smile Botox to the plan.
